We've been asked why service on new HARLEY DAVIDSON'S is so complex and why the owner can't do much of the service him or herself. While there are a few service related things owners can do, most service relating to engine performance requires special tools and training. In the old days, the "blockhead" engines were simpler and there were fewer electronic components in the bike. As the EPA and DOT mandated limitations of exhaust pollutants, they also mandated that more components be rendered inaccessible to the end user in order to prevent altering them, which could affect sound levels or emissions. Today's HARLEY DAVIDSON is a marvel of state-of-the-art metals, composites and electronics. Back then the end user could "fiddle" with his/her carb setting. Not so with electronic fuel injection. Our technicians have to be schooled in the latest diagnostic equipment in order to determine exactly what the problem is and how it can be solved most efficiently. The terms "shade tree mechanic" and "eye ball engineering" belong in the last century, not in this one. Today's technicians' toolboxes must have more than wrenches and impact drivers. Stethoscopes are now part of any trained technician's tools, as are electronic diagnostic units that look like they belong in the ER section of a hospital. Trust us when we tell these are expensive shop tools and still more expensive when we have to send a tech to be trained on how to use them. Why go through all that trouble?? HARLEY DAVIDSON motorcycles have maintained the highest value of any motorcycle sold in America. Part of the reason they have done that is because all the components are engineered to work with onboard computers to monitor the activity and make the necessary adjustments as you ride. We too miss the old days when we could fix it under a shady tree and using only the tools in our toolbox, completely overhaul our bike. Yes things have changed, but we feel they've changed for the better

SERVICE TIPS
Service Tip #1 Engine oil is a major factor in the performance and service life of the engine. Always use the proper grade of oil for the lowest temperature. Service Tip #2 Check your oil on your motorcycle while the engine is warm. Engine oil cannot be properly checked while the engine is cold. Perform Oil Level Hot Check as follows: 1. Ride the motorcycle until the engine is at normal operating temperature 2. With the vehicle resting on the jiffy stand on level ground, allow the engine to idle for 1-2 minutes. 3. Remove and wipe off the dipstick. Insert it back with the plug pushed completely into the fill spout. 4. Remove the dipstick and note the level of the oil. Add only enough oil to bring the level to the full mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill. 5. Start engine and carefully check for oil leaks around the drain plug and oil filter. |
